Mayun ceremony in muslim weddings announces the beginning of a half-week long celebration of  joyous wedding festivity. With the mercury dropping quite a few notches in the outskirts of the capital, in the cosy setting of a warm hall, Tanzeela’s wedding begins with the Mayun ceremony;  a celebration involving turmeric paste, vibrant marigold garlands, sweet scent of rose petals,  and the soft hum of traditional Sufi melodies. Her sisters—Batool, Anam, Nabeela—move gracefully around the hall, their own attire reflecting the joyous hues of the occasion. Each carries a small brass bowl containing the ‘uptan’, a fragrant paste of turmeric, sandalwood, and herbs, prepared lovingly by the women of the household. Her little nieces and nephew, a bundle of energy and excitement, attempts to mimic their actions, her giggles adding a lighthearted charm to the ritual . The arrival of Tanzeela- the awestruckingly gorgeous bride is  awaited by both the families. Draped in a simple yet elegant embroidered powder pink sharara, embodying the purity and anticipation that the Mayun ceremony signifies, Tanzeela appears at the gate, and our heart skips a beat at the sight of her beauty. Her sister Batool, carefully adorns her with the flower jewellery. Abraz, her handsome groom waits with bated breath in anticipation of his long cherished dream to come true, to see the love of his life finally turning into his bride.

The groom Abraz’s  mother initiates the ceremony. With gentle hands, she applies the first touch of ‘uptan’ to Tanzeela’s cheeks, a symbolic act of blessing and beautification.
